Margaret Dunning & George Lawton Scholarships
Community Financial Scholarship Fund is pleased to administer two Scholarship Funds in honor of Margaret Dunning and George Lawton, two people who epitomize the credit union's "People Helping People" philosophy.

Margaret Dunning Scholarship Fund
The Margaret Dunning Scholarship was established to acknowledge Margaret Dunning for her 23 years of volunteer service as a member of Community Financial's Board of Directors. Ms. Dunning's years of enthusiastic volunteerism and altruistic contributions to the Plymouth Community make her a model for today's youth. Community Financial is pleased to offer scholarships in her honor.

Margaret Dunning Scholarships are awarded to needy students who demonstrate good character, a commitment to their community and a commendable academic record. Each year scholarships are awarded based on the qualifications of the applicants. 2010 was the 22nd year this scholarship has been offered.

George Lawton Memorial Scholarship Fund
The George Lawton Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of the credit union's General Manager of 29 years, George Lawton. Mr. Lawton is best remembered for his kind heart and unrelenting drive to help others.  2010 marks the 16th year for these scholarships.

Scholarship Criteria:

1. The applicant must have there own personal Community Financial account and had it open for a minimum of 6 months. Being a beneficiary on another individual's account does not qualify. If you do not have your own account, you may open one if you meet any of the following criteria outlined in A, B & C below.

A. Any person living, working, worshiping, going to school or volunteering within Community Financial's charter area including the communities of Plymouth, Canton, Northville and Novi and the counties of Alpena, Otsego and Montmorency in Northern Michigan.

B. Any person who has a relative, through blood or marriage, who is a member.

C. Any person currently living in the same residence with a person who is a member.

2. The applicant must be enrolled or anticipate enrollment in an accredited institution in a business, education, medical, finance, technical, industrial or skilled trade discipline.

3. The applicant must be attending or have graduated from an accredited high school and provide transcripts for current and previous years.

4. Written recommendations from two present non-family members dated within the last three months are required.

5. Submit completed online application. Then submit four copies of the completed online application, letters of recommendation & transcripts must be mailed or dropped off at one of our branches by the stated deadline.

6. Applicants may be male or female, and of any ethnic or religious affiliation.
