School Spotlight: Embracing Summer Youth Education
Julie B greets a friend at a Sizzling Summer concert in Novi with plenty of fun things to share! |
You may already know that our Student-Run Credit Union team works tirelessly during the school year to provide exciting and educational opportunities. But did you know that they provide assistance and services during the summer as well? This summer, our Education Partnership Coordinators (EPCs) were hard at work helping the community with fun activities, educational presentations, and more!
Kellogg Park is the perfect location for fun and excitement at the Wilcox Wednesdays concert. |
If you’ve been to a Youth or Kid’s Concert this summer, you’ve probably seen our EPCs in their orange Summer of Sharing T-Shirts, passing out giveaways and spreading the Community Financial spirit to the community. Plymouth’s Music in the Park, Northville Tunes on Tuesday, Canton Tuesdays are Terrific, and Novi Sizzling Summer are just a handful of the great concert partnerships we were fortunate enough to cultivate this year.
Our EPCs also had the opportunity to participate in Money Mondays, a summer day camp program through the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. During Money Mondays, our team members visited Bentley Elementary four times throughout the summer with educational presentations designed to help campers learn financial skills to last a lifetime.
Similarly, team members helped campers at the Plymouth YMCA Summer Camp deposit their “Character Cash” (earned by exhibiting good character during camp) into their Camp Account! This saved Character Cash can then be used by campers to purchase items from the Camp Store. Older campers can work as “employees,” learning how to be tellers as they assist younger campers with their deposits. In addition to Deposit Days, EPCs also provided age-appropriate financial presentations every other week.
Think that sounds like enough? Not for our team members!
EPCs also assisted with various other activity fairs and summer camps in the area. Camp Canton, Power Play, Lakeshore, and Leisure Club were a few of the great organizational partners we were fortunate enough to work with this summer, boasting a grand total of 230 campers! At each camp location, activity fairs consisted of several hands-on stations with activities for the campers to try, rotating to make sure all kids get an opportunity to try each activity ranging from saving, spending, sharing, and other financial topics.
With a packed summer behind them, our EPCs are recharging and are ready to hit the ground running this fall! We’re pleased to welcome students back to the Student-Run Credit Union this school year with even more presentations, activities, Deposit Days, and educational experiences.
